Authority explainer, not a buying guide

The short version

The two most feared EMF exposures in biohacking get an IARC label of Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic." That sounds worse than it is. It sits below "probably" and below "carcinogenic," and the human studies behind it mostly show no overall effect. The one durable signal, a roughly doubled childhood leukaemia risk above 0.4 µT of residential magnetic field, is an association with an unknown mechanism, and no consumer device recreates that exposure profile.

Separate those worry lines from PEMF therapy devices, where the magnetic field is the whole point. There the research is about benefit, not harm, and the evidence for bone healing and some pain applications is real but modest.

And separate both from the sauna-EMF fear and the EMF-protection product market, where marketing runs well ahead of any measured risk. The honest position: worry less about EMF than the wellness industry wants you to, and do not buy a pendant or a sticker to fix a problem the research does not show you have.

How to read "Group 2B"

IARC, the WHO cancer agency, classifies agents on a four-rung ladder. Most people only ever hear the 2B label and not where it sits.

Group 1: carcinogenic

Tobacco, asbestos, ionizing radiation. Evidence of cancer in humans.

Group 2A: probably carcinogenic

Strong but not conclusive human evidence, usually backed by animal data. Red meat, glyphosate.

Group 2B: possibly carcinogenic

Limited human evidence, or sufficient animal evidence. Coffee, pickled vegetables, and both ELF and RF electromagnetic fields.

Group 3: not classifiable

The evidence is too limited to classify at all. This is where most things end up.

Two things matter about the 2B label. First, it is a hazard assessment: it asks "can this cause cancer under some exposure," not "does it at the levels you encounter." Second, a huge range of ordinary things sit in 2B. The classification alone tells you almost nothing about your actual risk from a sauna or a PEMF mat.

What the research actually shows

ELF magnetic fields (power lines, wiring) and childhood leukaemia

Strong

A pooled analysis of nine studies found residential magnetic fields at or above 0.4 µT were associated with roughly twice the childhood leukaemia risk (RR 2.00, 95% CI 1.27 to 3.13). The 99.2% of children below that level showed no elevated risk. The mechanism is unknown and selection bias may account for part of the increase.

ELF magnetic fields and IARC Group 2B

Strong

The WHO and IARC classify extremely low frequency magnetic fields as Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic to humans," based on that leukaemia association. This is a hazard label, not a proven causal link at typical exposures.

RF fields (mobile phones, wireless) and brain tumours

Moderate

The INTERPHONE case-control study across 13 countries found no overall increase in glioma or meningioma with mobile phone use. The Danish nationwide cohort found no increased brain-tumour risk either. A positive signal appeared only in the highest, least-reliable recalled-use group.

RF fields and IARC Group 2B

Strong

In 2011 IARC classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as Group 2B "possibly carcinogenic," based on limited evidence for glioma with wireless phone use. "Possibly" sits below "probably carcinogenic" (2A) and "carcinogenic" (1).

NTP high-dose RF in rats

Limited

US National Toxicology Program studies found "some evidence" of heart schwannomas and brain tumours in male rats exposed to very high radiofrequency levels, far above what consumer devices produce. This is animal, high-dose data, not directly transferable to humans using normal devices.

PEMF therapy for bone healing

Moderate

A meta-analysis of 22 randomized trials found pulsed electromagnetic fields increased fracture healing rate (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.35) and relieved pain. This is therapeutic PEMF, where the field is the treatment, not an incidental exposure.

PEMF for knee osteoarthritis

Moderate

A 2026 meta-analysis of 9 trials found PEMF benefit for knee osteoarthritis is time- and parameter-dependent: WOMAC pain improved at 18 to 21 days but not at one month, and the overall risk of bias across studies was high. Improvements may not reach clinical meaningfulness.

PEMF for low back pain

Moderate

A systematic review and meta-analysis examined pulsed electromagnetic field effects on pain and physical function in low back pain patients. Results support a modest effect, with protocol heterogeneity a recurring limitation across the PEMF literature.

Exposure guidelines

Strong

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection publishes reference guidelines for low-frequency (1 Hz to 100 kHz) electromagnetic fields. These are the accepted safety limits that cabin saunas and consumer devices are assessed against.

PEMF devices: the fields are the point

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is the one place in biohacking where the magnetic field is not an unwanted byproduct but the treatment itself. A PEMF mat emits short, localised, pulsed fields deliberately. That is a different question from "does incidental EMF exposure harm me," and it has its own literature.

The honest evidence read: PEMF shows moderate benefit for fracture healing and modest, parameter-dependent relief for some pain conditions like knee osteoarthritis and low back pain. But the trials are heterogeneous, protocols vary widely, and the most recent osteoarthritis meta-analysis flags high risk of bias and improvements that may not reach clinical meaningfulness.

None of this is about danger. The point is that PEMF is a real therapeutic category with real but limited evidence, and it should be evaluated on its benefits, not lumped into the EMF-fear conversation.

Saunas and the EMF marketing fear

Low EMF is a leading marketing claim across premium infrared sauna brands. Every major name leads with it. What the evidence supports is more boring: at typical exposure distances and session durations, most cabin saunas operate within accepted safety limits. If you are sensitive or want the lowest possible exposure, the thing to look for is published third-party EMF test results, not a brand promise. Sunlighten publishes EMF data for its SoloCarbon heaters. A brand that only asserts "low EMF" without numbers is asking you to take it on faith.

What actually matters for a biohacker

Distance and time beat everything

Field strength falls off quickly with distance. A heater or motor a few feet away is a very different exposure than one pressed against your body for an hour.

Trust third-party numbers over brand claims

If a sauna or device sells itself on low EMF, the brand should be able to point to a published independent measurement. A claim with no numbers is a claim with no verification.

Separate therapeutic PEMF from incidental exposure

A PEMF mat is a treatment device with a modest evidence base for specific uses. A phone or a power cord is not. Do not conflate the two risk conversations.

Know what an EMF meter would even tell you

A consumer EMF meter reads the local field around your device. Useful for comparing two saunas or checking a hot spot. Not useful for concluding anything about your cancer risk, because the research does not support a clean threshold for consumer devices.

Claims that do not hold up

These products and claims sell on EMF fear with no peer-reviewed support for the marketed effect.

EMF-protection stickers, pendants, and chips

No peer-reviewed evidence shows a passive sticker or pendant reduces the health effect of non-ionising radiofrequency. These are sold on anxiety, not data.

"EMF detox" and grounding pads as RF protection

There is no such thing as an EMF detox, and grounding mats have no randomized controlled trial support for reducing EMF-related harm. The evidence hub grades earthing as having no RCT support.

"This sauna is zero EMF"

No powered heater is zero EMF. A marketing claim of zero is a reason to ask for the measurement, not a reason to believe it.
