Infrared sauna EMF levels: what is safe and what to look for

Published sauna EMF numbers disagree by a factor of 100, and the reason is not the saunas. It is the benchmark each brand chose to measure against. Here is what the brands actually publish, why the numbers cannot be compared, and the safety check that matters more than any of them: 41,580 infrared saunas recalled in September 2026.

Sauna EMF and electrical safety

The short version

Start with the part that has actually hurt people. On September 17, 2026, Sauna360 recalled about 41,580 infrared and hybrid saunas sold in the United States, plus about 6,758 in Canada, because the infrared panels can short circuit and overheat. The company reported 67 incidents of overheating, melting, charring or burning. That is the documented safety failure in this category, and it is a fire risk rather than an EMF one.

On the EMF question, the numbers you can find online are a mess, and not because anyone is lying about their own measurement. Sunlighten publishes under 1 milligauss at the heater panel. JNH publishes 0.02 mG at the seat. High Tech Health publishes 22 mG for a competitor's "Low EMF" panel. Those are less different measurements than measurements against different yardsticks, and one of the yardsticks is about 4,000 times stricter than another.

What that means for a buyer:

  • No standardised protocol exists for measuring EMF in a sauna, so no brand number is comparable to the next brand's number.
  • Every figure is self-reported. The brands pay the lab, and three competing brands all used the same one.
  • Most brands publish only the magnetic field. The electric field, where the benchmarks disagree most, usually goes unreported.
  • No powered heater is zero EMF. Zero, near zero and ultra low are product names with no standard behind them.

The recall that matters more than EMF

The CPSC notice is specific about the mechanism. The infrared panels in the affected saunas and kits can short circuit, which causes them to overheat. The commission lists the hazard as a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards. Sauna360, the Minnesota importer, has received 67 reports of overheating, melting, charring or burning at the time of the notice. No injuries have been reported.

About 41,580 units were sold in the United States and about 6,758 in Canada, from Costco stores, pool and spa dealerships and various online sellers, between May 2013 and July 2026, at prices between $6,000 and $13,000. The recall number is 26-784. The remedy is a free in-home repair by a professional installer, and both CPSC and Sauna360 say to stop using an affected unit immediately. A separate Sauna360 recall covers Halmstad and Kiruna hybrid bench hardware, where the previous repair was ineffective.

The models span eleven series across the Finnleo, Helo, Tylo, Radiant Health, Saunatec and Sauna360 brands. The Finnleo S Series is on the list, covering the S810, S820, S825, S830, S840, S870 and S880. That matters here because the S820 is a model this site cites in its buyer guides, and because it is the kind of unit a dealer will quote you today. An affected unit can be identified by the brand badge, the control panel, the manual, or the serial number under the lower bench.

The part worth internalising: certification does not immunise a product from recall. A UL or ETL mark means a design was tested against a standard at a point in time. It is not a promise that the unit in your house will not fail. This recall is the clearest evidence in the category that the fire risk is real and the field risk is theoretical.

Why the numbers do not match

Search sauna EMF for an afternoon and you will find a hundredfold disagreement between companies selling the same class of product. High Tech Health publishes 22 mG for a competitor's low-EMF panel heater. JNH publishes 0.32 mG at the surface of its own heater. Those are two orders of magnitude apart, and both companies are describing a carbon panel infrared sauna.

Part of the gap is measurement position. A reading taken at the seat is not the reading taken against the heater, and JNH's own report shows a sixteenfold difference between those two spots on one unit. If one brand tests its panel alone on a bench and another tests a finished cabin with a person sitting in it, their numbers describe different physical situations. High Tech Health says it measures at the surface and argues that competitor figures taken three feet away hide the maximum. That is a fair methodological point.

The bigger gap is the benchmark, and this is the part nobody explains. Look at what each company measures its electric field figure against:

JNH measures against ICNIRP

It compares its 16.88 V/m seated reading to the ICNIRP general-public reference level of 4,167 V/m and reports it as about 0.4 percent of that ceiling. Against that yardstick the reading is trivially small. ICNIRP is the body that sets international exposure limits, and we read that 4,167 figure directly from Table 4 of the 2010 guidelines.

High Tech Health measures against BioInitiative

Its table sets the recommended long-term electric field level at 1.0 V/m, a figure it attributes to the BioInitiative group, and its own saunas measure 0.089 V/m. Its comparison row reports a low-EMF panel heater at 1,740 V/m, which exceeds that benchmark by a factor of more than 1,700.

One point versus 4,167 points. The two companies are not disagreeing about physics. They are reporting the same phenomenon against benchmarks that differ by a factor of about 4,000, and neither is obliged to tell you which benchmark it picked. BioInitiative is a self-published review by researchers arguing for much stricter limits; ICNIRP is the mainstream international body, and WHO has said the long-term evidence is insufficient to justify lowering the ICNIRP limits. That is a genuinely contested scientific question rather than a marketing trick, and it is the actual reason the sauna numbers look insane next to each other.

We could not reconcile the underlying readings, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. High Tech Health's 22 mG and 80 mG competitor figures carry no lab name, no test method and no report, and the company sells reduced-EMF saunas, so those two numbers are a competitor's claim. What we can say is narrower and more useful: when you see a sauna EMF number, the number is close to meaningless without the bench, the distance and the benchmark that produced it, and product pages supply all three only rarely.

The four questions that turn a number into information

  1. Where was the meter, at the seat or against the heater?
  2. Which field was measured, magnetic or electric, or both?
  3. Which benchmark is that figure compared against, and who set it?
  4. What is the background reading in the same room with the unit off?

Any brand that answers all four has given you something checkable. Most do not.

What the brands publish

Every figure below comes from the brand's own page, fetched live, and every one is a claim rather than an independent measurement. The last line of each entry is what the brand leaves out.

Sunlighten

Heater panels "measure 0.5 mG or less" and "less than 1 mG, with some as low as 0.1 mG." The page also calls the panels "almost zero" and says the level is "lower than 95 percent of common household devices."

What backs it Vitatech Electromagnetics testing summarised on Sunlighten's own page, with a "VIEW TEST RESULTS" link. Magnetic field only. The page also repeats Vitatech's 10 mG "ultra-low" recommendation and compares the panels to a toaster (3 to 70 mG), a hair dryer (60 to 200 mG) and a blender (200 to 1,200 mG).

What is missing No electric field figure anywhere on the page, and the appliance comparisons are marketing framing rather than a measurement.

JNH Lifestyles

Seated user position 0.02 mG RMS magnetic and 16.88 V/m electric. Heater panel surface near the power supply, the highest point in the cabin, 0.32 mG RMS. Instrument EHP-50D isotropic 3-axis meter, 10 Hz to 1 kHz, report number VTE-3155.

What backs it Named lab, report number, instrument model, frequency range and two measurement positions, covering both field types. The page itself states that "independent EMF testing by a named third-party laboratory is rare in the infrared sauna category."

What is missing Still brand-published work by a lab the brand paid. It is the most complete disclosure we found, not an independent audit.

Clearlight

Heater surface under 1 mG, seated position "virtually 0 mG," ELF "3 to 5 times below the threshold of concern." The page cites an EPA-proposed 3 mG standard and a Swedish 3 mG recommendation.

What backs it A comparison chart showing Clearlight at under 1 mG against "regular carbon heaters" at 70 to 100 mG and "ceramic infrared heaters" at 20 to 40 mG.

What is missing No laboratory is named on the page. The competitor comparison, the "only manufacturer" claim and the 3 mG standard citations are unverifiable from this page alone.

Good Health Saunas

Models GOAT, Hybrid and Signature, tested against EN 55035:2017 for magnetic fields and IEEE C95.6-2002 for electric fields.

What backs it A full eight-page Vitatech report, downloadable as a PDF, dated June 10, 2026 and numbered VTE-3559. It names its standards, its instrument (Narda EHP50F) and its frequency range (10 Hz to 1,000 Hz), and records seven test points on each of three models at seat and head height.

What is missing The brand page quotes the report selectively. Values we read in the report run from 0.125 mG to 0.879 mG, but the highest single reading is 6.536 mG at Signature Point 7, roughly seven times the figure the brand page leads with. The report's "below EN 55035" conclusion applies to average values, not that maximum.

High Tech Health

Its own heaters measure 0.36 mG and 0.089 V/m at the backrest. Its comparison table puts a "Typical Panel Infrared Sauna Heater" at 80 mG and 2,084 V/m, and a "Low EMF" panel heater at 22 mG and 1,740 V/m.

What backs it A table on its own page, using surface measurements and naming both field types. It also lists the benchmarks it measures against: 12.57 mG for magnetic fields and 1.0 V/m for electric fields.

What is missing The 22 mG and 80 mG figures for competitor heaters carry no attribution, no lab name and no test method, and High Tech Health sells reduced-EMF saunas. Treat those two numbers as a competitor's claim.

Finnleo (Sauna360)

S-series infrared models are described as "Pure Infra Low EMR/Low EF" on the S820 page.

What backs it No number, no lab and no report on the checked page.

What is missing A product name, not a measurement. The S-series is also inside the September 2026 recall.

Dynamic, Golden Designs, Maxxus

Product lines named "Low EMF," "Ultra Low EMF" and "Near Zero EMF." The Barcelona lists "6 Carbon Low EMF Heat Emitters."

What backs it No lab, no report and no numbers published on the checked product pages.

What is missing Naming only. Near Zero EMF is a product line title with nothing measured behind it.

HigherDOSE (blanket)

The spec sheet line reads "Electrical Field: Low EMF," with 350 to 420 watts, 4 to 5 amps and a one-year limited warranty.

What backs it No number and no lab on the page.

What is missing A search result claims "ETL By Intertek" for this product. That text is not on the live page, so we are not repeating it.

Three competitors, one lab

Vitatech Electromagnetics is a real commercial testing and consulting firm. It also produced the reports that Sunlighten, JNH Lifestyles and Good Health Saunas publish in their marketing. Read that as a structural observation rather than an allegation: the lab is real, the tests are probably real, and paying for the test is part of the sales playbook. The report is a brand asset here, not regulation.

The industry admits the comparability problem itself. JNH's page states that published figures vary significantly depending on measurement conditions and that a single number without configuration context tells an incomplete story. Sunlighten reports heater-panel values, JNH reports seated and surface values, Good Health reports seven points per model, Clearlight reports two positions in a single paragraph, and High Tech Health reports surface values against a stricter benchmark. Five brands, five methods, no shared protocol.

What we could not verify

The loose ends from this pass, written down rather than smoothed over. A guide that quietly fills these gaps is doing what the rest of the category does.

  • High Tech Health's competitor figures. The 22 mG and 80 mG readings for typical and low-EMF panel heaters are unattributed. No lab, no method, no report, and the company sells a competing product.
  • HigherDOSE ETL certification. Search results describe the blanket as "ETL By Intertek." That text is not on the live product page, which lists only "Electrical Field: Low EMF," 350 to 420 watts, 4 to 5 amps and a one-year limited warranty. We are not repeating the claim.
  • Clearlight's testing lab. The page we verified is on infraredsauna.com, because the clearlightsaunas.com resources path returns a 404. The live page publishes figures and names no laboratory.
  • Finnleo Pure Infra numbers. The S820 page carries the phrase "Pure Infra Low EMR/Low EF" and no measurement of any kind. There is no number to check.
  • White-label and factory-sharing claims. Review sites assert that several budget brands share a factory. We found no primary source, so this guide asserts nothing about it. What is verifiable is narrower: Dynamic Saunas Direct is a Golden Designs property, and the same Low EMF, Ultra Low EMF and Near Zero EMF naming ladder runs across multiple unrelated-looking product lines.
  • Warranty terms for most brands. Only the HigherDOSE one-year warranty was verified. Sunlighten, Clearlight, Dynamic and High Tech Health warranty pages were not fetched, so no figure appears here for them.

The pre-buy checklist

Eight checks in the order that matters. The first is the only one with a documented record of charring and burning behind it, and the second is the only one that will tell you whether a brand's number means anything.

Check the recall before anything else

This is not about EMF and it is not optional. If the sauna you are considering is a Finnleo, Tylo, Helo, Radiant Health, Saunatec or Sauna360 unit, or any used infrared cabin, check the CPSC notice and the Sauna360 recall page before money moves. The September 2026 recall covers about 41,580 US units across eleven series including the Finnleo S Series, which contains the S820 that other guides on this site cite. The remedy is a free in-home repair, and the company says to stop using affected units immediately.

Ask for the test report, then read what is missing from it

A credible EMF claim names the laboratory, gives the report number, names the instrument and its frequency range, states at least two measurement positions, covers both magnetic and electric fields, and reports RMS values. JNH meets that bar. Sunlighten and Good Health publish lab names and figures. Clearlight publishes figures without naming a lab. Dynamic, Golden Designs, Maxxus and HigherDOSE publish nothing measurable. Ask specifically for the electric field number, because most brands do not publish one.

Find out where the measurement was taken

Distance is the whole story in this category. JNH measured 0.32 mG at the heater surface near the power supply and 0.02 mG at the seat on the same unit, roughly sixteen times lower. High Tech Health measures at the backrest for the same reason. A number taken three feet from the heater is not comparable to a number taken six inches away, and a product page rarely tells you which one you have.

Measure the room, the doorways and the floor

Verify interior dimensions on the spec sheet rather than trusting a person count. The Dynamic Barcelona is 36 x 32 x 67 inches inside and 39 x 36 x 73 inches outside, and weighs 250 pounds before shipping. The Finnleo S820 has a footprint of 13.3 square feet. Check the route into the room as carefully as the room itself.

Match the electrical service to your circuit

The Barcelona needs 120V at 15 amps, which is a standard outlet but pulls close to the full circuit. UL 60335-2-53, published June 27, 2025, covers sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins up to 20 kW and 250 volts single-phase, so a residential cabin falls under a standard you can name to an electrician. An electrician visit before purchase is cheaper than returning a 250-pound crate.

Look for a named certification mark on the whole unit

UL or Intertek ETL, from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory recognised by OSHA. Intertek states plainly that its ETL Listed Mark is certification by an OSHA-recognised NRTL, which makes it equivalent in kind to UL. Be aware that a mark on a heater is not a mark on a cabin, and that certification is design testing rather than a guarantee. The S820 that this site cites elsewhere is both certified and recalled.

Ask about the smart features you are not using

Wi-Fi control panels and Bluetooth audio add radiofrequency emissions on top of the heater fields. High Tech Health offers wired Ethernet and a reduced-EMF mode for exactly this reason, and its own page notes that many smart saunas run wireless continuously even during a session. If you do not need app control, disabling it removes an exposure source at no cost.

Confirm the warranty terms in writing

Verified in this pass: the HigherDOSE blanket carries a one-year limited warranty. Warranty terms for Sunlighten, Clearlight, Dynamic and High Tech Health were not verified, so treat any warranty figure you read elsewhere as unchecked until you see the manufacturer page. Ask whether heaters and electronics are covered separately, because those are the parts that fail.

Why your meter cannot settle this

If EMF is a real concern, the only first-party check available is your own meter. The instrument the category reaches for is the TriField TF2. Verified from the manufacturer's spec sheet: AC magnetic mode is 3-axis across 40 Hz to 100 kHz with a maximum range of 100.0 milligauss, 0.1 mG resolution and accuracy of plus or minus 4 percent at 50/60 Hz. AC electric mode covers the same band up to 1,000 V/m at plus or minus 5 percent. RF mode runs 20 MHz to 6 GHz. Current price on the manufacturer site is $186.

That spec sheet contains a limitation worth understanding. The meter resolves to 0.1 mG. JNH's headline seated figure is 0.02 mG, five times smaller than the smallest reading a TF2 can display. A consumer meter cannot reproduce the best number in the category, because the brands are not measuring with consumer meters. JNH used an EHP-50D and Good Health used a Narda EHP50F, both laboratory instruments.

High Tech Health makes a related argument from the other direction, dismissing consumer-meter reviews on the grounds that inexpensive all-in-one meters lack precision and that the tests rarely control the environment. Its incentive is obvious, since that argument happens to favour its published numbers over third-party reviews. It also happens to be technically correct. A meter is a useful tool for comparing two cabins in the same room on the same day, and a poor tool for adjudicating a 1,740-against-0.089 disagreement between two companies.

If you still want to measure

  • Read at the seated position first, since that is where you will be, then at the heater surface to see the spread.
  • Take a background reading with the unit off and unplugged. Good Health's own report records 0.125 to 0.138 mG of ambient field with the sauna dead.
  • Expect the seated and surface readings to differ by an order of magnitude. That is distance, not a defect.
  • Check the electric field mode too, because that is the number most brands omit and the one the benchmarks disagree about most.
  • Do not read the result as a health verdict. No clean exposure threshold has been established for consumer devices, so a reading is a local field strength and nothing more.

The risk ICNIRP actually flags

EMF is not the main hazard in ICNIRP's own write-up of these cabins, and its page on infrared warming cabins is worth reading before buying one for daily use.

On the benefits first: ICNIRP writes that the radiant heat is believed to help with everything from hypertension and cardiac failure to chronic pain and fatigue, then states that supportive scientific evidence for the alleged health benefits is currently limited. That is the international radiation protection body commenting on the marketing claims. The traditional Finnish sauna literature is stronger, and it describes a different modality with a different core-temperature response.

On the skin: far infrared is absorbed in the most superficial layers of the skin, which is why prolonged reddening is common after a session. ICNIRP notes that chronic, repeated elevation of skin temperature can eventually cause pigment changes and skin damage, a condition called erythema ab igne, also known as toasted skin syndrome. Session length and frequency are the variables you control here, and they will affect you more than any milligauss figure on a product page.

ICNIRP also recommends that people at risk from hyperthermia, including those with cardiovascular disease or obesity, seek medical advice before using an infrared warming cabin, and notes that cabin air in these units runs around 40 degrees Celsius against 85 to 90 degrees in a traditional sauna. None of that is a reason to avoid infrared cabins. It is a reason to stop treating EMF as the only thing on the safety list.

Evidence by claim

What we would do

This guide deliberately does not rank cabins. The question it answers is not which sauna to buy, and the infrared sauna guides cover that with verified prices. What we would do before buying any of them is narrower.

Run the recall check first. If the unit is a Finnleo, Tylo, Helo, Radiant Health, Saunatec or Sauna360 model, or anything secondhand, open the CPSC notice and confirm the series before you pay. That step addresses the only hazard in this category with a documented record of charring and burning behind it.

Then stop comparing milligauss numbers between brands, because they are not comparable, and start asking the four questions that make a number meaningful. Where was the meter. Which field. Which benchmark. What was the background reading. A brand that answers all four has given you something checkable, and a brand that answers none has given you a product name.

If the whole question still worries you, the cleanest move is the one that requires no measurement at all: sit further from the heater, keep sessions short and infrequent enough to avoid chronic skin heating, and disable the wireless features you are not using. Those three decisions affect your actual exposure more than choosing between two brands whose numbers you cannot reconcile.

Ahlbom was fetched from NCBI. The CPSC notice blocks automated requests, so it was verified in a real browser session. The Good Health EMF report was downloaded and read as an eight-page PDF. Brand claims are quoted as the brands word them and labelled as claims. Where a claim could not be verified, it appears under what we could not verify rather than being filled in.

How much EMF does an infrared sauna actually produce?

The best-documented published numbers come from JNH Lifestyles: 0.02 mG RMS at the seated user position and 0.32 mG RMS at the heater panel surface near the power supply, measured with an EHP-50D meter across 10 Hz to 1 kHz. What EMF level is safe in an infrared sauna?

There is no sauna-specific limit, so the honest answer depends on which benchmark you use. Against ICNIRP, the mainstream international body, the general-public reference level is 200 microtesla (2,000 mG) for magnetic fields in the 25 Hz to 400 Hz band and 4,167 V/m for electric fields at 60 Hz, and every published sauna measurement sits far below both. Against the much stricter BioInitiative recommendation of 1.0 V/m for long-term electric field exposure, which High Tech Health uses, typical panel heaters can look like they exceed the limit by more than 1,700 times. Those benchmarks differ by a factor of about 4,000. Most brands do not tell you which one they used.

Are infrared sauna EMF levels linked to cancer?

The most-cited study is Ahlbom 2000, a pooled analysis of nine studies that found a summary relative risk of 2.00 for childhood leukaemia at or above 0.4 microtesla of residential exposure. The authors stated that selection bias may account for part of the increase and that the finding cannot be read as causal, and IARC classifies extremely low frequency magnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic rather than confirmed. Published sauna readings sit well below that 0.4 microtesla line, and no study has measured cancer outcomes from sauna EMF exposure. There is no established causal link.

What does "low EMF" actually mean on a sauna listing?

In practice it usually means the product line was named Low EMF, not that a measurement was published. Dynamic, Golden Designs and Maxxus sell Low EMF, Ultra Low EMF and Near Zero EMF lines with no lab, report number or figures on the product pages. The one figure the category treats as a benchmark, 10 mG or less for ultra-low, is a Vitatech recommendation quoted by brands that paid Vitatech. It is not a government regulation and carries no statutory weight. Ask a seller for the test report instead of reading the label.

Can any sauna really be zero EMF?

No. A powered heater passes current, and current produces a magnetic field. Every published report in the category shows a nonzero reading, including the lowest at 0.02 mG. Zero EMF and Near Zero EMF are product names. Clearlight describes its heaters as having exposure minimized to nearly zero while also stating that the seated level is virtually 0 mG and the heater surface is under 1 mG, which is three different phrasings of the same nonzero measurement.

Should I measure EMF with a meter before buying a sauna?

You can, but understand what it can and cannot do. The TriField TF2 resolves to 0.1 mG, which is five times larger than the best published sauna reading, so a consumer meter cannot reproduce the category-leading number. Read at the seated position first, then at the heater surface, and take a background reading with the unit off and unplugged so you know the room baseline. Where should sauna heaters sit to keep EMF exposure lowest?

Why do different sauna brands publish wildly different EMF numbers?

Are sauna blankets low EMF?

Unverified. The HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket spec sheet lists "Electrical Field: Low EMF" with no number, no lab and no report. Search results describe the product as ETL certified by Intertek, but that text is not on the live product page, so this site does not repeat it. Treat a blanket Low EMF line as a marketing claim until the maker publishes a measurement, and note that a blanket puts the heater against your body rather than across the room.

What UL or ETL certification should an infrared sauna have?

Look for a UL or Intertek ETL mark from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory recognised by OSHA, on the complete unit. UL 60335-2-53, published June 27, 2025, is the standard covering sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins up to 20 kW and 250 volts single-phase, so a residential cabin falls within a standard you can name. Intertek states that its ETL Listed Mark is certification by an OSHA-recognised NRTL, which makes it equivalent in kind to UL. A mark on a heater is not a mark on a cabin.

The recall was issued September 17, 2026 and the remedy is a free in-home repair rather than a return. It covers about 41,580 US units and about 6,758 Canadian units across eleven series under the Finnleo, Helo, Tylo, Radiant Health, Saunatec and Sauna360 brands, including the Finnleo S Series (S810 to S880) and Sentinel models. The hazard is infrared panels that can short circuit and overheat; the company reported 67 incidents of overheating, melting, charring or burning with no injuries. Is it safe to use an infrared sauna with a pacemaker?

Ask your device manufacturer and your doctor. JNH's page carries a medical-device advisory notice, and the general caution for electromagnetic environments applies to implanted devices. A sauna adds heat exposure and sweating on top of the field question, which is its own consideration for anyone with a cardiac device.
