The honest core claim

Every major longevity and mortality claim you have seen about saunas comes from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) study: a 20-year prospective cohort of 2,315 Finnish men who used traditional Finnish saunas at 80 to 100 °C, with löyly (water on stones) creating brief humidity spikes. That is the format those findings describe.

Infrared saunas are a different heat delivery. They use radiant panels at 45 to 65 °C with low humidity and no steam. The infrared evidence base is real but separate: small cardiac-rehab studies, FIR-specific recovery trials, and a handful of acute mechanism studies. It is not the longevity evidence, and that distinction is the whole honest answer.

Neither is better in the abstract. They are different heat loads with different evidence bases and different practical tradeoffs.

The head-to-head data

In 2025, researchers at the University of Oregon published the first direct comparison of hot-water immersion (HWI), traditional sauna (TRAD), and far infrared (FIR) sauna in the same healthy adults. PMID 40332494. It is acute and single-session, not a long-term outcome trial, so it cannot answer the longevity question. What it does is settle a simpler one: which modality actually raises core temperature and cardiac output in the moment.

The takeaway: far infrared produced the smallest core temperature change and the smallest cardiac output increase in this direct comparison. It is not nothing, but it is a lighter stimulus than traditional Finnish at 80 °C, and the difference shows up in the same subjects.

Where the longevity data comes from

The headline numbers are Laukkanen 2015 (JAMA Internal Medicine, PMID 25705824): 4 to 7 sauna sessions per week were associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, and Laukkanen 2017 (Age Ageing, PMID 27932366): lower dementia risk. Both used the KIHD cohort and both studied traditional Finnish saunas.

The 2018 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review (PMID 30077204) summarizes the evidence: it is strongest for traditional Finnish sauna. Infrared sauna is discussed there as promising but with a thinner, smaller literature. There is no comparable 20-year cohort of infrared sauna users, which is the honest reason the "infrared extends your life" framing does not hold up.

None of this says infrared does nothing. It says infrared does not yet have the long-term outcome evidence. If your primary purchase driver is the mortality and dementia association, buy the modality those numbers were collected in.

Muscle recovery

The FIR-specific recovery evidence is respectable. Mero 2015 (SpringerPlus, PMID 26180741) studied far-infrared sauna after strength and endurance training and found benefits. The Reed 2025 paper (J Appl Physiol, PMID 40331900) also documented that a single FIR session raised muscle temperature at depth without changing core temperature, which is relevant to the "does FIR reach muscle" question.

For pure muscle recovery, infrared is easier to use daily and has a direct FIR recovery trial. The longevity story is separate. If recovery is your only goal, infrared is a defensible choice. If recovery plus cardiovascular and longevity matters, the Finnish format carries the stronger combined record.

The up-front cost is similar for a cabin either way. The running difference: Finnish saunas need more electricity to hold 80 to 100 °C, and a wood-burning unit adds stove, chimney, and ventilation costs.
